Zoot Suit

Zoot Suit

Directed by Luis Valdez, 1981, USA, 1:43, English

Based on Luis Valdez's critically acclaimed play, Zoot Suit is an adapted Broadway treatment about the conditions leading up to the 1943 “Zoot Suit Riots” in Los Angeles. Zoot Suit is a fictive but historically based retelling of the Sleepy Lagoon trial against a group of falsely accused and convicted Mexican-American men. Spurred on by the miscarriage of justice and the anti-immigrant, anti-minority sentiments of pre-WWII hysteria, Zoot Suit channels the spirit of the emergence of Chicano culture, as it follows the trials and tribulations of pachuco gangsters and their stylish rebellion against the domineering white culture of pre-war Los Angeles.
