The Orator

The Orator

Directed by Tusi Tamasese, 2011, New Zealand/Samoa, 1:50, Samoan with English Subtitles

The first feature film ever shot entirely in Samoa, with a fully Samoan cast, The Orator is a story about courage and forgiveness, bitterness and love. An unassuming taro farmer and devoted father, Sailli is not like the others of his village: he is the descendent of a village chief and also a dwarf. His small stature leads to disrespect and ridicule for him and his family. Though his wife and daughter are exceedingly beautiful, his family is denied proper respect and he is forbidden from his hereditary chiefly title. When confrontation comes to bear, Sailli must follow his heart and do what is right: speak out for what he knows is true and defend what he treasures most.
